Homemade Hemp Milk

Homemade Hemp Milk

With the proliferation of lactose and casein intolerance these days, more and more milk alternatives are popping up on the shelves. The days of simply almond milk as the only milk alternative are long behind us. You can now make homemade hemp milk and others yourself!

Just the other day, I tried oat milk, which till that day didn’t even know existed. I must admit, it was quite delightful, but I digress. Hemp Milk, in my opinion, and others, is possibly the healthiest plant-based milk alternative on the market. With the whole cannabis and hemp craze, we are learning more of the health benefits of this miracle hemp plant daily.

Now, before I get to this easy and heart-healthy homemade hemp milk recipe – vigilance when purchasing dairy free milk is essential. There are talks about milk not being healthy and chock-full of antibiotics. These antibiotics that are administered to the cows during lactation are then transferred over to the milk and ingested by us. However, not all milk alternatives are good options – at least not many of the commercial ones on the shelves.

Please read all ingredients before purchasing your dairy free milk and make sure to stay away from carrageenan (very detrimental) and found in most milk alternatives. Companies are starting to remove this preservative due to people being more health conscious, but as you will see in this recipe, you don’t really need more than a handful of ingredients to make hemp milk.

Three bottles of vegan plant milk (homemade almond milk, poppy seed milk, and hemp milk).

This hemp milk recipe is specifically for shelled & hulled hemp seeds as seen in the image above. If you opt for whole hemp seeds (with shells & hulls), then you will need to strain your milk after blending due to the coarse sediment that will accumulate.

About Hemp

For those of you not familiar with hemp, here is a little background. Hemp has a nutty taste. It is sort of an acquired taste, but you will acclimate to it if you give it a chance. I had a hard time with it at first, but now I find myself eating hemp butter & hemp milk.

The hemp plant is one of the most versatile and healthy plants on the planet. Hemp can be used in every industry. It is durable and will not add to pollution or waste like plastics and oil-based products. Hemp is known to have one of the most complete protein profiles of all plants. The essential fatty acid profile is considered to be one of the most balanced and is extremely high in omega-3 fatty acids. Some of the many benefits of hemp include skin health, regulated cholesterol levels and incredible antioxidant.
